Our Executive Board, Staff and Members are deeply saddened to hear of Brother Elmore Nickleberry's passing. He was much loved by Teamsters Local 667. Mr. Nickleberry was the last living participant in the 1968 Sanitation Strike. He marched along with Dr. Martin Luther King and he marched along with Teamsters Local 667 in 2021 as Grand Marshall of our annual MLK Day Parade. He will be truly missed.
From Fox 13 News.... "MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Elmore Nickleberry, who helped shaped history in the sanitation strike, has died, a spokesperson with Memphis Station Union told FOX13.
The 88-year-old at the time was honored and awarded in 2021 with a plaque for his actions in the strike.
Nickleberry marched alongside Dr. Martin Luther King for equal wages and rights in the historic sanitation strike.
He was one of many who held an I am a man sign to change things. Fast forward more than half century, and we told FOX13 he remembered the day like yesterday when he interviewed him in January 2021.
Nickleberry was a sanitation worker for more than 60 years, continuing to support the union and workers.
He died at the age of 92, a spokesperson said."
